How annoying is that "about:blank" browser hijacker huh! MY bad experience with "about:blank" is this - Whenever I open a new IE browser window, it replaces my default home page url address with 'about:blank' and a pop-up window comes up. Ironically the pop-ups are anti-malware or anti-spyware ads!! AND, when I'm in Hotmail, pop ups come up every click I make!!!!!. I think about:blank was designed to cause the most grief in Hotmail.
Ok there is(are?) freeware out there to get rid of "about:blank". To tell you the truth I havent done much research about this but I found that Hijackthis and Adware Away could rid your computer of about:blank. BUT you have to go through many steps to remove "about:blank"
Well I happened to stumble upon a link to download MSN Toolbar. It's free. MSN Toolbar HAS A BUILT-IN POP-UP BLOCKER. After you d/l MSN Toolbar and the install completes, it plugs (surprise surprise) an MSN toolbar in your IE Browser window just below the Address/URL box.
You'll notice that it keeps track of the pop-ups blocked. And whatever website you're at, you could launch Hotmail and Messenger from the toolbar. How good is that!
This is only what I consider a band-aid solution as you havent really removed "about:blank". You'll only see "about:blank" only ONCE, whenever you open a new IE browser windows BUT the MSN pop-up blocker will kick in and blocks all pop-ups thereafter. You'll also find a counter for # of pop-ups blocked on the toolbar.
Does this make sense?
