Either some virus is in the machine, which shows how worthless AV programs are, some other malware exists or it's a permissions problem. Chances are it's one of the first two. Try updating it in safe mode and/or look under the startup tab in msconfig for the unwanted process.

Reboot and press F8.

The word 'malware' can be all inclusive. It can be a virus, worm, trojan, or spyware. There is no need to disable anything in msconfig at this time. Try F8 as Grinch said. Choose safe mode with netowrking from the menu.

Anti Virus programs suck. They are always behind in the race. That's why it didn't work. Download and run Hijack This and delete them yourself.

Couldn't the other AV program delete them for you or is it another worthless POS?

Open the registry. Click on the following + signs until you get to the Run folder and open it. Do the same in HKLM and HKCU

Software
Microsoft
Windows
CurrentVersion
Run

Look for things that don't belong and delete them.
