Changing Login method in Windows XP

When my machine was first set up when I bought it (set up by the retailer to be as much like Windows 98 as possible on my instruction) I did not have a login window...my machine just loaded in to Windows. For some reason, I am now getting a login window (which means I have to sit at my computer until it gets past this, which is very annoying). I want to be able to turn my machine on and come back when it is ready to go. Can anyone advise me on how to get rid of the login window on start up (and to remove the 'shutting down' window when shutting down as well...just because it really annoys me and is totally unnecessary). I am the only user of my computer. I am running Windows XP S2.
Thank you

Thanks ATNO/TW

Instant help and it worked. I've not only learnt a new skill but have a resource I can direct others to. Appreciated.
