There really isn't anything wrong with the log file that would stop the command prompt. You have a lot of stuff loading at startup but that's another story.

Download, update & run anti malware from malwarebytes.org

I have ran every spyware, malware, and virus software out there and have found nothing. I have used Spybot Search and Destroy, House Call, AdAware, Eset Nod 32 version 4, Zone Alarm, Max Secure Spyware Detector 2009, plus a few others I can't remember at this moment. The machine does not runs slow or have any other problems.

Boot to safe mode. Does it run there? If not, do a search for cmd.exe Try to open it if it finds it.

Other things to look at also.

Is this a work computer or a home computer?
Do you get the following message when you try to run it?
Quote:
"The command prompt has been disabled by your administrator"

If you get that message read and try the steps here
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/disablecmd.htm

If it is a work computer, the cmd may have been disabled by a group policy set in place by the Network Admin and you may have to talk to them about it.

I tried booting in safe mode and it still does the same thing. The Task manager works perfectly. I don't get any error message at all, it just flashes on the screen for a second or two.

This is on my home computer, and have no other problems at all. I went to the System 32 folder and tried to run it from there and get the same thing. This is puzzling.

Instead of entering cmd in the run box, enter command & press enter.

Typing command only brings up a DOS like window, but you can type anything you want, and nothing happens at all. Also have to end task to close it. I even have another drive in this machine with Windows installed on it as well, and went the the system 32 folder in that system folder and tried to run the cmd.exe from there, and it does the same thing.

If you go to Start || Run and type: cmd /D (make sure the D is capital) does it run?

If so open regedit and look at the following keys
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Command Processor
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Command Processor

and see if either (or both) have a value named "AutoRun". If the AutoRun data item exists, rename it to something else (e.g., "FUBAR") and try opening the CMD shell again.

I tried the cmd /C and cmd /D for both drives and get the same result. The DOS screen will come up for about 1 or 2 seconds then goes away. I ran a search in the Registry for both of those keys and didn't find either one....

Well in XP SP3 those keys should exist, by default. If they are missing it could be the cause of the problem, but I don't know for sure. If you want to add them, paste the following into Notepad, use the save as option and change the save as file type from txt to all files and save it as cmdFix.reg

Then open Regedit, and use File|Import to import the contents into your registry. These are the default values for those two keys.

Quote:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Command Processor]
"CompletionChar"=dword:00000009
"DefaultColor"=dword:00000000
"EnableExtensions"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Command Processor]
"AutoRun"=""
"CompletionChar"=dword:00000040
"DefaultColor"=dword:00000000
"EnableExtensions"=dword:00000001
"PathCompletionChar"=dword:00000040

I tried to import the key values into the registry but get an error message stating that the selected key is invalid... hmmmmm

I manually searched and found the keys:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Command Processor]
"Default"=REG_SZ:(Value not set)
"AutoRun"=REG_SZ:
"CompletionChar"=dword:00000040 (64)
"DefaultColor"=dword:00000000 (0)
"EnableExtensions"=dword:00000001 (1)
"PathCompletionChar"=dword:00000064 (64)

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Command Processor]
"Default"=REG_SZ:(Value not set)
"CompletionChar"=dword:00000009 (9)
"DefaultColor"=dword:00000000 (0)
"EnableExtensions"=dword:00000001 (1)

Odd that the registry search couldn't find them, but not that unbelievable...

I recently, within the last 36 hours, installed MS Automated Installation Kit which has a built in command prompt, and it does the same thing...

It is like it is being blocked, but even in safe mode, there is no change. There should be nothing in safe mode to block it that I can think of, but yet, that is how it acts.

I think I will try booting from the Windows CD and see if I can repair it from that point. But I keep thinking it's something stupidly simple, and since I have absolutely no other anomalies or problems of any kind, I'll just keep looking until I trip over it...

Any advice or inspiration is very much appreciated. I picked a good time to quit smoking.:)

Well, it still could be related to a virus, but I have to agree with Don, your log doesn't look like there's anything there that should be of concern.

I suppose if you haven't done so, try running the System File Checker utility as described here
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310747

I would use the sfc /scannow option
You can do this from Start | Run

You may need your Windows Installation Disk.

Good News! As a last ditch effort, I went back and tried everything over again, hoping I missed something the first time... well, I did. I tried renaming the "Autorun" in the
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Command Processor] directory, and the command prompt now works. Do you think the value was corrupted or changed by something? I use UniBlue Power Suite 2009, and I would think it would have found that.

That would be my best guess.

Nice to know you got it working. Thanks for the update. I suspect this will help others in the future.

Thanks for all the help! I must admit that with all the recent deep down cleaning and optimization, the machine is running a lot better.

I hope that this will help anyone that runs into this situation. I have seen several other posted problems similar to this, but was caused by something different

Good luck with with quitting smoking. I use Chantix and it works great. It takes the cravings away immediately. The hard part to get over is the habit of having one in certain situations. I always found it easier to smoke a cigarette and take a few minutes to think about a situation and find a solution... a break from the action to regroup... Just don't have any cigarettes around and it won't be long before you forget them completely. I went from smoking 2 packs a day to nothing in less than 2 weeks.
