Post 3+ Months Ago

This has been a problem for the past 7-8 months or so, and I've been able to look past it, but now I would just like to know what exactly the problem is. After reboot of my computer, everything works fine, there is no loss in performance whatsoever. After about 6-10 hours of the computer being on, however, things drastically began to change:

1. Internet browsing slows down (and things connected with this [streaming, etc.] slows down performance even more)
2. Downloading things slows down the entire computer's performance
3. With this, playing music begins to get choppier and choppier the longer the computer stays on

My CPU usage also seems to skyrocket to 100% when doing the simplest tasks (downloading a 30mb file, streaming) that wasn't a problem at all the first few hours it was on. It will stay at 100% until whatever it DL'ing is complete, and then it is still higher than normal.

After restart of the computer, everything is back to normal again. Is this just a problem that I have to deal with, or is there a solution to this annoyance?

Intel Pentium Dual CPU 1.46 GHz
2 GB RAM

Here is my HijackThis log:

Have you monitored the memory usage (look through the task managers processes tab) of the computer when this happens yet ?

In my experience, on any operating system, gradual slow downs like this are usually attributed to at least one application having a memory leak which causes the system to swap memory contents to disk frequently.

You have 2GB, but if an application has "reserved" 90% of that by means of a memory leak you end up with 200MB of memory for applications to use.

I have, using Task Manager and Process Explorer as well. A group of applications take about the same amount, and svchost takes a large chunk of it as well. The memory only seems to skyrocket when I'm doing something such as downloading online, streaming, etc. Simple browsing affects it as well, but not as much. The next time it starts to get slow, I'll take screenshots of both and post them here.

The only memory-intensive applications that are running the entire time the computer is on (mostly) are Firefox and iTunes. Could it be a memory leak with those? Should I go out and upgrade to 4 GB? It seems as if 2 would be enough.

Your log is fine, nothing suspicious.

2GB should be fine with Vista, although a lot will argue 4GB is needed to be truly happy.

I did notice this entry

C:\Program Files\Sony\Shared Plug-Ins\Media Manager\MSSQL$SONY_MEDIAMGR\Binn\sqlservr.exe

SQL is a hog. It will take whatever RAM you have and use it. If that application isn't necessary I would dump it. I bet you will notice a performance increase if you do.

I uninstalled the SQL application from my computer, so we'll see if that was the culprit later on in the day. I just attempted to stream some video, and it seems to be working well. The computer has been on for 17hr37min, so being able to do that is astonishing.

I'm really thinking about upgrading to 4GB, though; if the problem persists even after the increase in memory, what else could it be? Hard drive speed too slow?

Sorry, I'm going all over the place, I would just really like to see this fixed.

I've left the computer on to the point where it starts to lose performance, and it seems to be Firefox. While attempting to stream a video, the video got quite choppy until it was finished loading. The CPU was at 100%, and Firefox's CPU usage was around 20-25, where it is usually below 10.

Also, it is grabbing about 100 megs of memory, and before performance is lost, it is around 40-50.

Is this a telltale sign of a memory leak in Firefox, and what can I do about it? Deleting SQL kept it going for a bit longer than usual, but it seems to not work anymore.

Firefox had some pretty major memory problems in version 2, but I'm pretty sure they resolved them with the release of 3.0 or 3.1. Make sure you're using the latest version.
