Convert TV DVD's to AVI files

I bought Season 1 of Friends on DVD. It is a tv series. I want to create separate AVI files so that I can keep the episodes on my hard drive. Can anyone tell me how I can do this only using free programs. NOTE:Each disc has about 4 episode on it and I want them each in a separate AVI file.

Check out their guide section. There are so many tutorials on how to do this it will make your head spin, most of them using free applications.
