I have Windows 2000 and this problem only came by recently:

My comp will not show the Taskbar or the Desktop when I log in. I have Windows 2000, so I could open programs using Task Manager.

However, Internet Explorer as well wouldn't start. Is this tied to the main problem? Explorer.exe is shown running but does not respond.

there's a piece of spyware that causes this, called sysu.exe or something similar. try ending task on that from your task manager.

if that fails, try safe mode, and run a system restore.

if you are sure you do not have a virus, then my recommendation is to pop in your windows 2000 cd and let it boot from that. when you get to the part that says install windows hit <enter> to do that then it will prompt you to repair a copy of windows installed on your system.

IMPORTANT if it does not give you the option to repair do not continue just reboot. unless you want to wipe your whole windows or winnt directory and lose all windows settings.

also see this MS article for further reference, this may also fix your prob.

another thing that you might try:

when you get to the blank desktop.... press ctrl+alt+del .... select taskmanager.... click on New Task... type control and press enter. This should take you on into your desktop.

When I had this problem i ran Ad-aware6 and it remove whatever was causing the problem.
