I/O device error

I have an older desktop computer (probably at least 4 yrs old). It only came with a dvd drive, however all of my important information is on 31/2 in floppy discs. I bought an external floppy drive that plugs into an usb port. When I initially inserted the first disc I got a message that the information couldn't be read and would I like to down load a conversion. I said yes. After it was downloaded I clicked on A: drive under "my computer" and was able to access the data on the disc. However, once I removed that disc and inserted another I kept getting the error message "unable to read disc due to I/O device error"
Every disc I have inserted gives me the same error code (even the one I originally inserted and could read). I really need the information on these old floppy discs but I am not computer literate enough to know how to fix this problem. Can anyone help me in "computer dummy" language? :?
I am using Windows XP
