Are you installing from a network, internet, or cd-rom?

yes, more details as to what you are doing, installation source, and you
pc's background (model, OS, etc) would be helpful. :)

I have a similar problem... I downloaded it off of Microsoft.com and tried to install DirectX 9. The first error that it came up with was the one that says

"The software you are installing has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP. (Tell me why this testing is important.)

This software will not be installed. Contact your system administrator."

The only option is to click OK, so when I do, it says

"DirectX did not copy a required file."

Then it says that "Installation failed."

It should work. My system specs are:
-P 4 2.6 GHz Hyper Threading 800 MHz FSB
-1024 MB DDR 400 MHz RAM
-ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 128 MB DDR AGP
-80 GB 7200 RPM Serial ATA Samsung HD
-52X24X52X CD-RW
-16X DVD-ROM
-Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Platinum 6.1 Surround Sound Card
-300 W Power Supply
Any ideas?

Was the microsoft.com the windows update web page? I have installed the directX9 from the windows.microsoft.com update page to both a win 2000 and win 98 sec. But I haven't tried installing to winXP yet. It maybe there is another update prior to the DirectX9 that needs to be installed first from the update page. Check the dependinces of the update and make sure you have everthing required software wises. Other than that, I would suggest calling microsoft but it wouldn't be worth the toll call :D , sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

harriw - i think microsoft has a bad link or something. although i've not
tried to download directx 9 myself, I know several people have
successfully. I'm of the opinion that "if it ain't broke..." ;)

since win2k and xp came out, they've got a driver signing check.
everytime i've seen that it had to do with windows not testing the
particular drivers being installed. So they leave it up to you to decide,
and install them forfeiting micrpoft's support if you run into troubles.

However, I've never seen it abort the installation like that. Sounds to me
like the download link is incorrect or something because usually this is
not an issue. Image

I happen to have the exact same problem. You are supposed to renames *root*\windows\system32\catroot2 to anything else. It doesn't work. :(

To correct this issue, first go Start > Run and enter services.msc
A list of Windows Services should now appear on your screen, scroll down the list until you find Cryptographic Services. Right click this and select properties. Now ensure that the startup type is set to automatic and click the start button in that window if the service status is stopped.

^^ is from some weird site i found. Hey, at least DX works now :)

^^ I think I'll make it my regular haunt...

 I neglected to mention - some SPs of xp wont have a start button in the left pane. In this case right click on the service and select start

I have been getting this same error, not only with DirectX but with all Windows update installs/patches, etc.

Anyone figure out what the deal is with this?
