Hi SNK,

I am going to install software A. This software requires that I must also install two other software before it can be fully run. In other words, prerequisites to install software A, I must have software B and software C installed in my computer first. In sequence, it should be like below:

1) Software B

2) Software C

3) Software A

Software B path is in path C:\
Software C path is in path C:\Program Files

When I install software A, I will put it in path C:\

I need to tell the computer that A is in path C:\

I will go to Control Panel > System > Advanced.

Under System variables, I will create a new variable called A_HOME. I will put this new variable's value to be C:\

Same goes to Software B and C. Software B requires the path to be in C:\somefolder
Stated in the installation document, I need to edit.

So, I would edit the existing variable called path and put its value as C:\somefolder

Software C, its path is in C:\Program Files
I will create new path for this like Software A. I create new variable called C_Home. I will put this new variable's value to be C:\Program Files

Usually, we cannot make this up as we like. We follow installation manual of Software A, in this case.

there are other usage, apart from the one said above, is the path variable which exists under environmental variables, that path variable instructs the OS to get information of some files(defined by you) and make it accessible to everywhere (meaning all your local drives, command prompt application etc)

ex. during installation of java sdk, it is required for you to place the bin folder path in that path variable so that all application has the access of javac.exe or java.exe programs
