No -- I mean the event log link. See the link in your graphic on the event log error? Click that one. That should get you to a page at microsoft giving you info about the error.

OK....I guess the obvious question is did you go to Windows updates and install the critical updates?

//skip that question -- I saw your added comment.

hmmm...unfortunately I'm at home and don't have access to XP at the moment. I know there should be a way to install other updates, but not SP2. I know I skipped it myself for now, but I can't remember how. If someone here tonight that is on XP can tell you how. Otherwise, I'll switch to XP in the morning at work and see if I can remember how I did it.

Sorry it took so long to get to this. I had quite a few computers to work on today. Anyway here's how to bypass SP2 but install other updates.

Open Internet Explorer
Select Tools | Windows Update
Windows Update Gives you 2 options: Express Install and Custom Install
Choose Custom Install and let it scan.
The first option will be the "recommended" option for SP2 - skip that.
Immediately below will be the option to "Review and Install Other Updates" - Choose the button that says "Review Other Updates"
There you will have the option to pick and choose which ones you want to install. Uncheck any you don't want and click the "Go to Install" link.
You'll have one more option to select or deselect the updates then click the button that says "Install"

This will let you install all updates without installing SP2.

I don't really know what's going on with that Rat. If I find anything I will definitely post it here.

Is there another error before or after the one you already post Rat?

Rat -- I finally thought of some good wording to use to search in google and found this:

http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operati ... 18979.html

Scroll down and skip all the great suggestions suggested by PaulLong.

Scroll down to the very short "Accepted Answer" by The-zone:

Quote:
Have seen issues before where Norton anti-virus has caused issues with IE closing windows, try disabling it and check if you still have problems , if you do click on tools>internet options within IE and clear the IE cache by clicking 'delete files' and 'clear history' options and try then to close IE

The reason that jumped out at me was because I had intermittant problems with this and clearing the cache did the trick. Plus I was starting to think about anti-virus interferance even before I read that.

I'll bet his solution works for you. If not, revert back to all the excellent tips in PaulLong's reply.

//*note - an accepted answer at experts exchange is the one that worked to solve the problem.
