Starthook.dll belongs to 3D User Picture as best as I can tell
http://www.aveapps.com/3duserpic.html
http://www.processlibrary.com/directory ... starthook/

Quote:
3D User Picture replaces the user picture in Vista's startmenu with a pretty 3D animated one.

Requires a DirectX 9 capable graphicscard

Try uninstalling it and see if it resolves the problem.

Thank you for replying but I do not know how to remove it. It is not a program so I don't know whether I can uninstall it.

Well it is a separate application. Here's a thread from the guy that wrote the application
http://www.neowin.net/forum/lofiversion ... 69379.html

I noticed while reading the thread, that is is a 32 bit application, and will not work on 64 bit, so if you have a 64 bit system, that's most likely your problem.
Apparently it injects code into explorer.exe which is why it probably affects explorer.exe

He did say he fixed crash issues a couple of times and gave a link to the updated program
http://mpj.tomaatnet.nl/Ave3dUserPic.zip

If you need to uninstall it, I would assume that there would be a folder created in c:\ProgramFiles for AV3D or something similar. Most programs will have an uninstall file included in their folder, so I would assume you would find one there.

If you still can't uninstall it. Post a hijackthis log. Follow the instructions here: mswindows-forum/steps-take-before-posting-your-hijack-this-log-t34568.html

The log will help us find the startup entry and you can remove it from startup with hijackthis. Effectively that should stop the problem.
