I have had a similar problem when I have numerous large Avi files. In this case it was caused by Windows attempting to query the avi files(This also prevented them being deleted after being clicked as it was still parsing them, only a restart would solve it). This was solved by a registry hack. Have you checked the MS website? Or perhaps your computer is still loading items? There are a few good programs you can use such as filemon.exe which catalogs all the file accesses so you can pinpoint it better, unfortunately it can sometimes overload you with information :) You'll never believe just how much Explorer accesses various files, or the registry for that matter.

Thats the only suggestion I really have. The only other thing MS brings up seems unrelated as it appears to be talking about something that should happen all the time. I hope that helps, I know it doesn't match your symptoms exactly but thought I'd suggest it as you never know.

I Had the same problem. Explorer using about 40% of CPU. I deleted the "recent documents" and the problem was over.

Check here for one possible answer:

This also says the same thing:

Most of the things I read on this relate to AVI files (or movie files) causing the increase.

I suspect this is the same registry hack that Alkatr0z made mention of.
