Emo, do not panic yet. I created this thread because of the problem in Windows 98. The solution is not the same for Windows XP.

Do not re-install XP for the sole reason of Folder Options being missing. There must be a solution to this. At first, I am thinking that there may be no Folder Options in XP Pro at all. I could be wrong. Because there's Folder Options in 98, does not mean that there's Folder Options in XP.

Someone who knows about this problem in XP Pro may respond

Folder options is under the Tools Menu in XP.

Actually the same registry Key already mentioned in this thread applies.

Code: [ Download ] [ Select ]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]

If there is a value named "NoFolderOptions", it needs to be set to 0. double-click on the value name, change the value data to 0, then exit regedit and log off or reboot. You can also delete the "NoFolderOptions" value.

It also possible a policy may have been set for the entire system. Check this key as well:
Code: [ Download ] [ Select ]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]

I did test this on my system and a value of "1" for "NoFolderOptions" in either HKEY_CURRENT_USER or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE did indeed remove the folder options from the Tools menu.

As always, back-up your registry before making changes.

This isn't a fix but try entering this from Start > Run:

Control Folders

That should bring up the folder options window. Whether that works or not will at least be another clue to the problem.

Well, emo - that answers the question -- the policy is in effect at domain level and is set by the administrator. You won't be able to change it. For whatever reason he restricted that option and you can't change it on your local computer even if you are an administrator of it. You'll just have to do some sweet talking to your system admin if you want it back.

It doesnt make any sense. How are you not the Administirator if its a home PC? If yo know who the Administrator is, go up to him/her and tell him/her to make you an Admin.

Umm...have you changed any permissions to anything lately? In particular have you added "deny" to any users? The most difficult thing to grasp about permissions is that "deny" overrides "allow". This gets complicated by group memberships (that's why microsoft pops up a warning when you check "deny" and apply it for a user or group. For example if your admin account is also a member of the user group and you deny permissions to users for something then you're screwed.

It takes a lot of thought and headache pills to really map out good permissions.

I think your problem may lay along these lines.

I've done a little digging in the group policy editor and found the setting for folder options. I don't have much hope that this will work since this just sets the same value in the registry as was mentioned before. Might be worth a look though.

Go to Start > Run, Enter gpedit.msc

Go to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Explorer

On the right, 3rd setting down should be "Removes the Folder Options menu item from the Tools menu".

This should be "Not Configured". If it is enabled, double click on the setting, choose "Not Configured", then click ok.

It's there for me just like you stated. Dang it...if you don't get there before I do JrzyCrim one of us needs to get to the Windows tricks thread and detail all the msc snap-ins. Of course a quick study would just type in *.msc in Search For Files and Folders and do it before we get there. I'm so glad you posted this. I was trying poledit and forgot that was an NT thing. Forgot that got changed.

The mmc is a nice tool. I like the fact that you can create your own custom consoles with only the snap-ins you need.

I'll try to throw something together for the Tricks thread. The hard part will be keeping it simple. There's a lot of ground to cover. I figure a basic mmc tutorial and a short description of the snap-ins should be sufficient.

I've been using XP for over 2 years now and I still haven't scratched the service of what can be done with the mmc.
