Try to use FDISK to format your Vista Home.

Grishmat, sorry, but how in the world is that going to help? The poster said the drive wouldn't even read the CD.

yoshikev001, I have to ask this. Are you using an original genuine XP disk or a copy? If it's genuine, try it in a different computer and see if it is recognized. If it is not the disk may be bad.

If all else fails..... Just find yourself a windows 98 start up disk and format your hard drive with that. Then you can use the GUI to start the XP installation. Also, sometimes and when you don't have a true name brand CD/DVD player or writter, Vista as well as other operating systems will not recognize it. There is also the issue of Vista not having a true DOS and therefore all the hardware in your computer will be run by Windows O/S drivers and not by DOS or another command line base O/S. These are things to keep in mind when you are dealing with this problem. You can also get a utilities disk from the Hard driver manufacturer and use that to wipe the disk clean and reset the partition. I hope that this helps you out.

Is your cd drive working ? . Is the cd bootable? . Check whether your cs is in low priority in the boot order .
