Just got off the phone with my Gateway sales rep, and he just told me that in March, Microsoft will be discontinuing the sale of Win2K OSs to OEM's. I haven't seen anything official on the net yet, but apparently after March you won't be able to order a computer with a Win2K OS.

I don't doubt that...but not really a big deal since most stores
have stacks of the OS on the shelves.

I guess it's a problem if you want it preinstalled though...just a
minor detail heheheh. :P

thanks for the info. :)

Speaking of 2K, does anybody know where I could find cheap (legal) copies online? Or a single copy with several licenses cheap?

I've got to setup a network in a local office here. All their PCs are currently running XP, and they're being switched to Win2K (they're just having too many problems with XP).

It's just a small network (3-5 PCs total), but if I can find something cheaper than $200/copy at Best Buy, it'll certainly help :)

Try looking at pricegrabber.com

http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_getp ... 942d14ee87

It's where I search for the best prices around.

About two thirds of the way down that page is a comparison for "generic product".

The ad for tekdeal looks promising, and even if that particular list isn't what you're looking for, you should be able to find what you ARE looking for there.

Cheers, eh...

Thanks, I'll check that out...

I had a look at the first one in the OEM section...

pricegrabber said 95 bucks, I go to the site and it's $139, heh. Looks like pricegrabber has room for improvement ;)

No, Pricegrabber is just an indexing service, it's left up to the user to determine whether a product or vender is suitable or reliable.

The ranking system is usually a good feedback method, just don't rant on it *l*

If there are inconsistencies found in vender pricing a quick e-mail to the vender is often fruitful.

Besides, I went to newegg.com and what used to be called googlegear.com for almost all of my purchases.

Newegg.com
http://www.newegg.com/

Zipzoomfly (aka: gogglegear.com)

PS. Isn't $139 still a lot better than that $200 you quoted?

Cheers, eh...

Note: Just did a three minute search at newegg.com and found this OEM option:
http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDe ... 138&depa=6

They do require a hardware purchase, but they have set aside some $5-$6 purchases to make things easy on the consumer.
