Hello everyone.

I have a problem with my computer. Just recently, I have noticed that my CPU usage has skyrocketed when the computer is idling. I assumed initially that there was a worm or virus effecting my computer, but I scanned with an updated norton antivirus and found nothing. I ran Adaware and SB S&D. I also ran Trend Micro Housecall and Panda Activescan and I found a few problems but I fixed them and I'm still experiencing the high CPU usage. The two programs I noticed are xmlps.exe and iexplore.exe that are using most of my CPU. Any program I open takes 100% of the CPU for about 2 minutes however, until the program completely opens. This is making my computer almost unusable. If anyone can help I would really appreciate it.

You should check in your task manager to see which process is taking up all your cpu, right click on it, then go back up to view, update speed and pause the process. Its just something you can try if the downloads and all that other stuff doesnt work.Im no computer whiz but it works for me. reply :P

...unless it's the SVCHOST.exe taking up the CPU time. If you end it, windows'll have to restart. I suggest the method of the Moderator, or run Ad-Aware, Spybot and PestPatrol to eliminate eventual malware - maybe even a virusscan.

I had this.. it slowed everything down.. I then relised that i was infected with a mIRC Trojan. (botnet) I got exploited.

i formatted installed windows drivers, app's argh.. lol Lovely now =)

There is a way too see if you are infected. Pull the plug on your net, Do control atl del, leave it.. 30 seconds.. if your processor useage goes down then maybe you are..

This happens because when you are connected too the internet you join a irc channel without knowing. You pc can then be controled Remotly.

The processor been high could be to do with the guy is using you to try get more infects (exploits)

Fix this item

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [LIES COOL] C:\DOCUME~1\LIA\APPLIC~1\INSIDE~1\Long Grey.exe

I can't find anything else in this. Can you open task manager? Check there which process is consuming the resources? Or get Process Explorer and find the process with any unknown vendor name or without any name.

I've read your original post from...19 Nov 2004...
Don't want to upset any Norton users... but, I've dumped mine with a similiar problem...
I had even installed the new at the time Beta version of Norton AV 2005...
It found no virus on my system (using Norton)...
Then I un-installed Norton and installed... NOD32...
Norton is a resource hog...
I (NOD32) found 5 virus's and I haven't looked back...
You can get a free 30 free trial... If you don't like it... reinstall your Norton...

Well precious is no more running Norton and installed NOD32 already as I can see. But the problem is not there. I think he is missing something else.

Precious, your HijackThis log is fully clean. Please download Process Explorer. Check the process list to find out which is eating up your memory much.

Consider these

!) Defrag your system regularly

2) See your eventlog to find whether any service fails to load
Start>Run...type "eventvwr" and check the entries under 'system' to find any red or yellow mark

3) Use msconfig to reduce startup entries
Start>Run...type "msconfig" and go to startup tab. Uncheck the entries that you think unnecessary

4) Use Diskcleanup to clean your harddisk regularly.
Right-click on a drive and go to Properties>General>Disk Cleanup

5) How much memory do you have? You can get better result by upgrading RAM

6) Run a diskchecking
Start>Run...type "cmd" and type "chkdsk" or you can do also this- right-click on any drive>Properties>Tools>Error checking>Check now...Click start while all the options are selected(you will be prompted to run a checking at next reboot. Confirm that.
