Hello everyone.

I have a problem with my computer. Just recently, I have noticed that my CPU usage has skyrocketed when the computer is idling. I assumed initially that there was a worm or virus effecting my computer, but I scanned with an updated norton antivirus and found nothing. I ran Adaware and SB S&D. I also ran Trend Micro Housecall and Panda Activescan and I found a few problems but I fixed them and I'm still experiencing the high CPU usage. The two programs I noticed are xmlps.exe and iexplore.exe that are using most of my CPU. Any program I open takes 100% of the CPU for about 2 minutes however, until the program completely opens. This is making my computer almost unusable. If anyone can help I would really appreciate it.

You should check in your task manager to see which process is taking up all your cpu, right click on it, then go back up to view, update speed and pause the process. Its just something you can try if the downloads and all that other stuff doesnt work.Im no computer whiz but it works for me. reply :P

...unless it's the SVCHOST.exe taking up the CPU time. If you end it, windows'll have to restart. I suggest the method of the Moderator, or run Ad-Aware, Spybot and PestPatrol to eliminate eventual malware - maybe even a virusscan.

I had this.. it slowed everything down.. I then relised that i was infected with a mIRC Trojan. (botnet) I got exploited.

i formatted installed windows drivers, app's argh.. lol Lovely now =)

There is a way too see if you are infected. Pull the plug on your net, Do control atl del, leave it.. 30 seconds.. if your processor useage goes down then maybe you are..

This happens because when you are connected too the internet you join a irc channel without knowing. You pc can then be controled Remotly.

The processor been high could be to do with the guy is using you to try get more infects (exploits)

Fix this item

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [LIES COOL] C:\DOCUME~1\LIA\APPLIC~1\INSIDE~1\Long Grey.exe

I can't find anything else in this. Can you open task manager? Check there which process is consuming the resources? Or get Process Explorer and find the process with any unknown vendor name or without any name.

I've read your original post from...19 Nov 2004...
Don't want to upset any Norton users... but, I've dumped mine with a similiar problem...
I had even installed the new at the time Beta version of Norton AV 2005...
It found no virus on my system (using Norton)...
Then I un-installed Norton and installed... NOD32...
Norton is a resource hog...
I (NOD32) found 5 virus's and I haven't looked back...
You can get a free 30 free trial... If you don't like it... reinstall your Norton...

Well precious is no more running Norton and installed NOD32 already as I can see. But the problem is not there. I think he is missing something else.

Precious, your HijackThis log is fully clean. Please download Process Explorer. Check the process list to find out which is eating up your memory much.

Consider these

!) Defrag your system regularly

2) See your eventlog to find whether any service fails to load
Start>Run...type "eventvwr" and check the entries under 'system' to find any red or yellow mark

3) Use msconfig to reduce startup entries
Start>Run...type "msconfig" and go to startup tab. Uncheck the entries that you think unnecessary

4) Use Diskcleanup to clean your harddisk regularly.
Right-click on a drive and go to Properties>General>Disk Cleanup

5) How much memory do you have? You can get better result by upgrading RAM

6) Run a diskchecking
Start>Run...type "cmd" and type "chkdsk" or you can do also this- right-click on any drive>Properties>Tools>Error checking>Check now...Click start while all the options are selected(you will be prompted to run a checking at next reboot. Confirm that.

I am having a similar problem, and would love some help as well if anyone can offer it. I bought this computer for my girlfriend and her sister, and it had a virus within a week... CPU spiking randomly to 100%. Any help is appreciated.

Hey guys i am a noob here with the same problem... after my system slowed down and IE became unstable i checked around and found a couple of processes called vaibaami.exe I asked around and it seems that nobody has heard of such a process... and also there are couple of new stuff under my system32 folder... like vaibaami.exe, slguard.dll, BASEMOD.dll and couple of other applications...

heres my hijackthis log file after i got rid of that process... there was a bit of improvement but still got problems...

hey im new to this forum and i would like someone to help me on this issue of mine. My computer was working fine till suddenly it was really slow so i checked my 'WINDOWS TASK MANAGER' to see what proccess were running and their where two 'IEXPLORE.EXE' running using most of my memory. I think it's some kind of spyware but i can't get rid of it, i even used spybot and norton to search but it didn't make a difference.

Here is my HIJACK LOG

THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME

Also, the program that is hogging the CPU is explorer.exe i know all about it and what it does but it is either below 4% or 50% and doesnt change. that seems odd to me. sometime when i close it and restart it it shoots up to 50% and i have to restart it again for it to work. Help is MUCH appreciated, i've been working at this for about a week now to no availe, thanks!

I wonder if anyone looks at any of the previous posts.. No one has posted a reply to any of the above HJT logs.. Anyway your the lucky one :) Your gonna get a reply.

Okay the only file I think you need to check out is this one:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dpnsvr.exe
Some pages say its a part of windows, others not but I've never noticed it running on my computer. You can submit it to http://www.virustotal.com and see if any of the virus scanners say its a virus.
Other than that it doesn't have a autorun entry so unless its using a sneaky method its only running because another program started it for a reason,

Various places say that these are nasty:
O1 - Hosts: 127.255.255.255 serial.alcohol-soft.com
O1 - Hosts: 127.255.255.255 http://www.alcohol-soft.com
O1 - Hosts: 127.255.255.255 images.alcohol-soft.com

Personally I'm not so sure, none of them provide any information as to why and I'd be inclined to keep them seeing as you are running Alcohol 120%
They are up to you. There isn't any harm to your computer or Alcohol if you remove them. The hosts file is just to allow the computer to find what IP address a server is without having to go through DNS.

Other than that its all clean!

Post 3+ Months Ago

Hi,
Sorry to do this (I will go and introduce myself later - promise)

I, like most, go a googling when something has had me stumped for a few hours. I ended up on this thread and felt compelled to sign up and voice an opinion (yep, female)

I cannot believe the amount of "1 posters" saying hi, heres my log, then expecting someone to sort it out. Personally admin, I think your patience far exceeds mine, hats off to you all - you do a great job.

Sorry again for dropping in univited............

Hi Chukkawobbly (that's a great nick BTW :)

This seems to be all a part of the new disease of the internet.. I mean people who don't look for answers themselves before asking for help.. It's really simple to hit search, or maybe browse the stickies that must have been seen before all these logs can have been posted..

I'm a linux only user these days, (ehhem.. not saying anything about my foray into BSD) though I did at one time help out with windows problems eventually I decided not to give any more of my time to helping "the enemy"

The admins and members here are the most patient anywhere.. No flaming or anything.. It's great. This thread rather proves the old saying "help comes easier to those who help themselves"..As it is quite obvious unless the advice in the following link is taken the posts will be ignored (unless some kindly member has some spare time and feels like a few posts, probably for little if any thanks.
All previous un-answered posters should look at http://www.ozzu.com/mswindows-forum/steps-take-before-posting-your-hijack-this-log-t34568.html as I do when somebody comes to me with a misbehaving 'doze machine.. Works every time. :D
