Hi Everyone!

Recently, I've had this problem with winlogon.exe. It would take up about 50% of my CPU and since it's a Hyperthreaded Pentium 4,, that's 100% on a regular CPU. It just happens for no apparent reason.

I've run:
Microsoft Antispyware BETA x3 times
Lavasoft Ad-Aware x5 times
Spybot - Search and Destroy x2 times,
Tread Micro Housecall x2 times
Avast Virusscanner x4 times overnight
System File Checker x1 time
Windows Update x1 time.

SpywareBlaster is up-to-date.

I replaced winlogon.exe with a copy from another computer and that still didn't fix the problem.

The last thing I haven't done is a in-place upgrade of XP and a complete format and reinstall.

If nothing works, I have no choice but to reinstall Windows XP.

I'm running out of ideas here so any help would be appreciated.

For the record, this started happening after I finished downloading files off mIRC.

Thanks guys!

Hi ic144,
your log is much clean. Run HijackThis and check the following. Now close all other open windows and fix the item.
Quote:
O20 - Winlogon Notify: msupdate - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\msupdate32.dll

If that doesn't help you enough restart in safe mode and take another log to post here.

Hello pramitroy,
Thanks for the advice.
Unfortunately, fixing that service didn't work.
I've rebooted into Safe Mode and below is the HijackThis log record.

Thanks again!

OK, first download Killbox.
Unzip it. We'll need it later.

Run HijackThis and check these. Close windows and fix.

Doing a quick search I have come up with this:

One - this seems to be a common problem.
Two - sometimes attributed to anti-virus programs and boot protected programs
Three - no real cure

I'll keep looking though but doing a search for winlogon.exe and high cpu utilization gives up a lot of useless results (mostly HiJack This logs and unrelated problems)

Here is the virus info for msupdate32.dll
http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyse ... dropa.html

And many trojans hook in that Winlogon shell. Its really very common and it can be caused without any spyware attack too.

um....little help here. Killbox says the file is still in use and won't delete it.

Are there any boxes I have to check before I delete?

no kidding.
I spent hours on Google looking for problems like this. I also looked up the viruses that people said it might be related to. But nothing really came down to a clear straight answer.

Ok. After rebooting the computer twice and tweaking it with Bootvis, I can declare that (so far) winlogon.exe has STOPPED acting up.

Thanks everyone!

I've reinstalled WINXP on my computer at least 7 times and I was hoping that it would be the last before Vista comes out. It's a real pain to reinstall all those apps.

Seems like I can last a bit longer. Hopefully 1 more year.......

One last question, pramitroy:
Were do you guys learn this stuff?

I've been browsing around this forum and you guys know exactly what you're doing. A problem can related to so many possibilities, how do you know to pinpoint it exactly? Tonight, it seemed like you've fixed this before and had the procedure memorized or something. Just curious to know....

Thanks again.

I really appreciate it.

Oh sorry for being late. Yes that should be so. You had to allow Killbox to delete that on next reboot.

Well, glad to see you solved it now. :)

Glad to find this discussion and know this error is solveable, I have this same problem, however, my situation seems to be different and I am hoping someone can help me as well.

This problem seems to have arisen after I was doing some testing with BGInfo and then reset my desktop back to its orginal walpaper. I should also mention that I also run the aplication UltraMon to manage my dual screen dekstop.

Pramitroy, please let me know if you have any insights as you did for IC44.

I am having a similar problem.

Here is a Hijack This log file run in safe mode.

I deleted the suspect items (.exe files in temp folders) but am having trouble bringing the system back up afterward. I'm still working on why it is not coming up properly. Have not been able to isolate it yet.

Has anyone else seen these particular .exe files and isolated what virus/trojan they are associated with?

Symantec A/V (corporate), Spy Bot, Spy Sweeper, Ad Aware (6), and other tools have not been able to identify anything. However, these nasty little programs successfully blocked their operation at times. Even in safe mode, they could not identify them.

I'm having the same problem. I thought I had fixed it yesterday when it got rid of the WGA/MSUpdate.

Last night when I left the computer, it went back to it's state. I have 2 users on my computer, so by default after no activity, it goes back to that screen where you can select the user to login as. Anyways, here's a Hijack log...

And for some reason, I can't install BootVis in safe mode! Please someone help! I've installed Windows 4 times this weekend and it keeps happening!

You will need a scan.

If after all that, the problem still persists than remove the following entries [u]only if the problem persists[/url]

Quote:
O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [ShowDeskFix] regsvr32 /s /n /i:u shell32
O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [IE7-10] rundll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSectionEx NR_IE7en.inf,AfterUserStart,,4,N
