Any ideas on what could be causing a spyware program from consistently popping up demanding activation? It looks like the owner of the computer has downloaded a "bad" copy of some anti-virus software and seems to have a virus as a result. This person fails to listen to me too often.

The software downloaded is simply called "Antivirus 2009"...not Norton Antivirus or anything like that. Just "Antivirus 2009". I was told he got it from a link he recieved in an email. The email was from a hotmail account and the information is that of what Hotmail usually adds at the end of an email sent from them...but somehow i think he's gone and installed something else that was advertised on one of the many sites he'll have gotten from that point.

Any tips on ways in which to rid this error then i'd appreciate it. If anyone knows of the software i'm talking of could you confirm whether it is as bad as it seems (to me). I'm not keen on removing it until i know for sure because there was a payment made for the full version yet there appears to be no activation key and the company isn't responding to email correspondence.

Amd no, it's not my computer. I'm not that silly, believe it or not :)

Gonna sound incredibly dumb here, but it's just a case of deleting the files from Windows Explorer...right?

Nah, there a "Fix" option in HijackThis; you'll see it once you've run a scan. You best bet is to boot into safe mode, close down all unnecessary programs (especially browsers), then run a scan and fix the entries.

There are times when certain items will just refuse to go away, but we'll address that issue if/when it arises.

After you do the fix in HJT you'll still need to delete the files in Windows Explorer itself. HJT only deletes the files that are BHO entries.

It's funny because when i do a simple delete attempt on those files i then get offers to upgrade the account of this silly antivirus which still hasn't gone.

Gonna do a reboot in the hope that it might be better.

You may have to disconnect the file from the process before you can delete it. Unlocker does the job well. If that does not work and the file happens to be attached to a Windows process (unlikely), you can probably nab the thing with APM.

Initially it didn't accept the deletion after downloading Unlocker, however having done the reboot as it suggested it has removed one of the files. I had no issues removing the second after the reboot too.

So far, as things stand everything is looking really good. But i am not one of those optimistic types of people as nasty things tend to happen to me when i show any level of excitement...like the virus attacking again.

Thank you Spork and Alkatr0z for your help on this issue. Spork, you've shown everyone here why the site owner respected you enough to be introduced as a moderator. Nice one!

I do what I can ;)

If you want to post a fresh HJT log just to make sure you got everything, I'll take a look at tonight before I head to bed or tomorrow morning when I get to work.
