Windows XP uses something called "Simple File Sharing." You can disable it in XP Professional, but not XP Home.

I tried this, and it still does not work. There are so many options that I may be doing it incorrectly. I even tried deleting all the users or accounts, so that nobody and had permissions, and then added users or accounts (not sure what they are called) back in and give them all full permission ("full control" I think it was called)... but this did not work either.

According to http://www.pcuser.com.au/pcuser/hs2.nsf ... 14007B145B the Microsoft fix at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/810881/ works, but only if you have Windows XP Pro. I have XP Home, so this does not help me. :(

If you don't have XP Pro you can connect your HDD to a Pro system and do it that way.

This is another reason I dislike XP Home.

I should never have made my files/folders private... this is ridiculous. I have administrative abilities, and I cannot access files off my hard drive! I have found records of people doing this successfully on the Internet, but i cannot duplicate what they have done (their directions are always a little too vague to follow accurately).

You could try using a live CD like Knoppix to access the hard drive and copy files over if you are really desperate.

Good idea, grinch2171... Can Windows 98 access NTFS drives? I have a boot CD for win98 on one of these Dell CDs (for some reason one of the CDs comes with it).

EDIT... answered my own question:

Win98 does not come with NTFS support, as showcased by Sysinternals' "NTFS for Windows 98" which Microsoft has taken offline:

Just searching on the 'net to see if supports NTFS... do you know if it does? I keep finding stuff like this: http://developers.slashdot.org/article. ... /10/191202

Avast!, on a pre-Windows boot scan, accesses those files and folders. Is there anyway to get to the command prompt *before* Windows boots up, near the same moment in "time" when Avast! can access the drive in full, without distraction?

Warning to anyone else downloading Knoppix... some of the mirrors do *not* have the latest version. So do not judge what is the latest version by looking at whatever is on a random mirror! ;)

Just a thought while waiting for Knoppix to download... if i were to copy the files/folders using Knoppix, would the permissions be copied along with them?

As far as getting to the command line before boot up you could using the recovery console.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058

I honestly can't say about using Knoppix to copy stuff, I just know people have done it, I am no way an expert on using it.
