Hi there guys,

I recently had messages left for me in an open conversion box open over msn messenger 7.5. MSN then decides to freeze all of a sudden.. but i knew from previous experience that the information/conversation may be saved somewhere in windows files. The conversation didn't actually save in 'previous msg history' as it wasnt closed off properly so no luck there.

But what i did was do a search of the 'windows' file for the most recent modified files which i thought might contain the conversation. So i copy and pasted these files which carried the names:

CollectedData_1798.xml
history_db.xml
(both from - C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\DataColl)

as well as:
MSMSGS.EXE-2B6052DE.pf
MSNMSGR.EXE-366A1A81.pf
DataStore.edb
(all from - C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch)

So i was just wondering if there was anyway in recovering this conversation in anyway (using or not using these files i saved)? How would i go about doing this?
Or is it lost forever? :(

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

cheers :D

Go to Start, Search, choose "All files and Folders." In the "A word or phrase in the file" box, type a few words from the conversation that you remember. From there click "More Advanced Options" and choose "Search System Folders" as well as "Search Hidden Files and Folders" and "Search Subfolders." If a log exists, that should find it.

mm That will hopefully work lucassix but I'm not hopeful on it..

I doubt the PC Health ones would be it.
These two:
MSMSGS.EXE-2B6052DE.pf
MSNMSGR.EXE-366A1A81.pf
Are just prefetches for the exe files associated with MSN Messenger.

I can't really see it being this one the DataStore.edb either as the extension seems doesn't match what I'd expect. You can certainly try it though.

Chances are that the conversation is only saved once it has ended. Prior to that it is just in the RAM. If you are really slick with your computers you could find it in the paging file but that I think would be alot more trouble than its really worth. Plus by now its most likely been overwritten.

And how, precisely does that address the problem, scarslilpyro? To suggest an alternative program does not address the need to recover lost history which is the point of the post.

For darchinova, I really believe your history was lost in the crash. At least the part you are looking for.
