Usually I always replace the default notepad.exe with a better notepad. However since I got WinXP SP2 after replacing notepad.exe in the Windows folder a few seconds later the original would keep coming back. What a pain!

So I looked into it and found the solution:

Create backup copy of c:\WINDOWS\notepad.exe
Change Explorer view options to show system files
In temporary folder: Have your new notepad.exe file ready
Copy the exe file into the clipboard ( select the file and hit Ctrl-C )
Open folder C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 in Explorer
Ctrl-V
Open folder C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache in Explorer
Ctrl-V, Backspace
Ctrl-V, Backspace
Ctrl-V, Backspace

*Just for your information Ctrl-V pastes the new notepad and Backspace moves you up a directory. By doing this as outlined above you replace all of the default Windows notepad.exe files. Make sure you copy the notepad.exe that you want to use first by selecting that file and hitting Ctrl-C

Also one other note, for the first step where I said to replace notepad here:
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386

on some computers it might actually be: C:\WINDOWS\i386 and notepad will have the name like: notepad.ex_ -- Simply copy the notepad.exe over the notepad.ex_ and make sure you keep that same file name with the underscore (or whatever symbol its using)

*smiles. Of course you could just temporarily disable system restore. Delete Notepad once and add your new one.

Turn system restore back on.

Cheers.

I tried turning off system restore like ATNO/TW said. IT DIDN'T WORK

Thanks bigwebmaster I've been scratching my head about this one for a while and was getting a bald spot forming. Really appreciate your help.

Actually, system restore isn't applicable in this situation. System restore doesn't work automatically; it's something that the user initiates manually. Restore points will be created by some installers but the system will never revert to a previous state automatically.

Windows file protection, on the other hand, works in the background to protect system files.

Yeah -- that was what I was refering to. Looks like I used the wrong term earlier.

number one result returned in google for "cannot replace notepad", well done !

To update this thread with a little more info.

Windows 2000 service pack 4 also has windows file protection.

To replace notepad in Windows 2000, follow BigWebMasters instructions above but use c:\winnt rather than c:\windows.

Addtionally you may have a number of messages pop up regarding system file corruption. just keep pressing cancel until they go away.
