Long time, Ive used W9x. When I in explorer select "sort by date", logically the newest files were at beginning and the oldest files were at end. But in W2k this is vice versa.
Ive tried to change sort order by selecting "view details" and clicking on arrows. Then I select back "view list". But Explorer cant memorize this setting.
Simply I want to have one folder(not all) ordered by date like in W9x and in "list" view...
Is there any solution?

In Explorer,
Start by choosing Tools, Folder Options, Click the View tab. Under Advanced Settings, make sure Remember each folder's view settings is checked; then click OK.

This for windows 2000: just some tips for you.

Delete the following 2 keys (export it first just in case)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\BagMRU
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags

Close regedit and try to set your folder preferences now.

Do you have up to the ShellNoRoam key and BagMru and Bags missing within, or are you missing the ShellNoRoam key completely?

Well, here is what is in my key:

http://home.satx.rr.com/airforcedave/shellnoroam.reg

It appears to be just a slew of hex values. Maybe you can't save your settings because there are no settings to edit. You could try importing that into your registry and seeing if your window will settings will save. Of course, backup the registry first.

Intersting site, but I didnt find any "fix" correspondng to my problem. Maybe in XP is same problem. Anyway, Those fixes are for Xp, but I have 2K. And using improper registry fixes may screw it up my system more that now.

I forgot you had 2000
did you no that XP is like the civilian 2000
2000 =business world
XP = home world

There so close they could be kissing cousins,or brother and sister.
looks like this :
Windows 95/98/SE/ME (they are all related )
Windows NT/2000/XP (they are all related)
Plus the fact that those reg hacks at that site (there smart .lol)
They would not let themselves load up.

It's just one big OS happy family !

you no what you do with a problem like that ? do ya no

You live with it ,or you repair the OS ,or you FDISK & REFORMAT
and start all over again .

Hmm...
As I said no .reg file on that site related the problem. Also I wont switch to XP- I rather prefer stability than XP skins.

Thats problem which i descibed I found on another 2K or even XP computer. I have fairly fresh installation. so Reinstall wont solve it.
I think that this is problem of all win 2k + fammily (-like you said).

One more time we may have it now !
you activate View-Explorer style. It does not appear in View-Classic style.
No indicators in open archive view (both classic and explorer styles).
No indicators in explorer (no archive open) view using classic style.

so this means The arrow indication appears when you activate View-Explorer style with no open archives.

The indicator will appear, if no archive is open. if you have opened an archive you can't see the indicator. It will be a + or -
and every time you make a change in those settings you have to reboot.

But once you activate View-Explorer style with no open archives.
they may fix it (just don't have a file open when you doit) then reboot.

Then you will see the + or - after the column headers
and this is just to sort in that file ,the way they appear ,it just
reverse's them .

And you did this correct : you have to have a file
opened first ,Configure the sort order, icon size, column widths, and file details .you no
In Windows Explorer, select Tools , Folder choose the View tab.
In the View tab, click "Like Current Folder" or "Apply to All Folders."
Click OK.
