I have a backup of my windows XP computer via a 3rd party backup application. I want to install the backup application on Windows 8 and then restore the backup to Windows 8. Will that work?

What does the backup contain? If it is a backup of the OS itself, or user files and profiles, it likely won't transfer over. If it is a backup of applications or application information it may stick.

Another option would be to make an XP virtual machine in Windows8 and then restore your backup to that.

Thanks for your reply. You confirmed my thought about using my (Macrium Reflect) backup with VMWare or Virtual Box in Windows 8 as the easier way to go instead of trying to figure out what files to transfer. The apps I use are easy to reinstall. Thanks again.

You might also try Hyper-V Client for windows 8.
I wish getting backuped apps up on win8 was that easy as one may think.
Having old version restored under VM is always a good idea :)
