it's a default, system folder windows requires and no matter
how many times you delete it, it will always come back. Same
with folders like My Music, My eBooks, etc in My Docs. Annoying,
but we have to live with it unfortunately.

Heehee...(I love this job) My turn UNFLUX -- not so. (sound like deja vu?)

The problem with the Links folder in Favorites is that "Links" is also a toolbar. By default, IE installs with the links toolbar open just to the right of go. When you delete the links Folder from favorites, it will come back staring at you each time you open a new session as "empty"

Go to View|Toolbars and uncheck the links toolbar.

The links toolbar will dissapear.

Now delete the Links Folder from Favorites. Close any IE browser windows that are open.

Open a new IE session. Voila! No more links folder. It should remain that way until/unless you reactivate the links toolbar.

now i have done that in the past, and it came back anyway!
that's my reason for saying it can't be avoided. If it works now,
great! but i use the links toolbar so no reason for me to test. ;)

yeah, some popup windows will bring up links whether they're enabled or disabled, so when those come up, it recreates them...

In the end, I gave up, and just used links for a few JavaScript buttons - doing whois in the current domain I'm browsing, or to submit the URL I'm currently at to the links database on my site, that kinda thing.

Now the links sits up next to the nav buttons out the way at the top of the browser window (I'm in 1600x1200, so I have plenty of space up there)

Not sure what you guys are doing different, but I've gone for the last six months or better without the Links folder in IE favorites on WIN98, 2K and XP via the method I described above.
