Hey Gents. The MBR on a FAT/FAT32 is 512 bytes. Should fit on a floppy easily.

Hi folks,

First, if ur running XP then do a bootable floppy by going in any XP machine inserting a Floppy in and then right click properties format then tick the create MS-DOS bootable disk . click ok.

Now, as previously said the MBR is only 512 long and casn be saved on a floppy.
Notice that the partition are stored from bit 447 until 512 (0 til 446 being allocated for the OS to be able to boot).

Now, one do not need to save his mbr unless he is gonna install an other os on it (such as Linux) as this can be restored using fdisk/mbr.

Then my point. (which I'm currently using*...)

If you really are scared to mess up with your mbr and you are running XP then what u can do is:
Copy the boot.ini, ntdetect.com and ntldr to a standard blank floppy disk (NOT A BOOTABLE FLOPPY this time).

If you ever mess up with ur mbr then just put that floppy in and press power on your PC you'll be sorted.

Thierry

PS: *this is because I meessed up with my mbr and that I have now one floppy to boot to linux RH 9 and another one for XP!!!
