It appears other windows OS's were not affected.
If you have XP with service pack 3, don't update McAfee yet.

If you have done this, there is a remediation tool that "suppresses the driver causing the false positive by applying an Extra.dat file in folder, then restores the 'svchost.exe' Windows file, the file quarantined as a result of the false detection."

The remediation tool is at https://kc.mcafee.com/corporate/index?page=content&id=KB68780

My recommendation is, don't renew your subscription.

Looks like MCaffee is offering support to get these computers up and running again, and offering to reimburse people if they've already taken their PC to a local computer repair shop.

They're also handing out 2 year subscription extensions for people with computers rendered inoperable or severely impaired by the update.

Quote:
Additionally, because we value our loyal customers, home or home office users whose PCs were rendered inoperable or severely impaired as a result of the security update will receive a free two-year extension of their current McAfee subscription product at no charge.

McCaffee is having an issue to solve with Windows SP3. So, if you are a XP user then don't update to SP2.
