Have you bridged the network connections on Machine 2? I assume you are pinging from Machine 1 to Machine 3 in the pings? Or are you doing it from Machine 2?

Just go into the Network Connections part of the Control Panel. Right click one of the connections and click "Bridge" it will ask you which other connection you want to bridge and you just select the connection for the other NIC.

Ouch sorry missed that they were 2000. Its not a native thing in 2000 and below unfortunately. You could try this(I know the page is about 98 but the software and methods might well still apply for 2000)

To be honest I think your best way is to connect the two switches. Looking at the complexity that the problem might present I think its probably by far the simplest way.

If you want to connect to a machine that is behind another switch/router/hub you will need to set up port forwarding. It depends on your switch how to do it.

No I will test the method myself using virtual machines. I want to see if it works before I suggest it to you as it is fairly complex and I have not tried it before so will take some trial and error. You will not need anything more than you have already if it works.
