One of guys I work with recently bought a new laptop to replace the old and our IT guy says that he can't connect the new computer to our network because of the operating system. Why is that? It's an HP Pavilion with Windows Vista btw.
Thanks!

Only certain versions of Vista can connect to a domain which I am assuming this is what you mean by connecting to the network. Vista Home and Vista Home Premium cannot connect to a domain just like XP Home couldn't either. You will need Vista Business or Vista Ultimate.

I didn't know that. Good to know. Thanks Grinch!
Is it part of their security feature or just their way to make people pay for the more expensive version?

It's just a way for Microsoft to get more money from businesses that need the domain capability by paying more for the business/premium edition.

Home versions are meant for home users. Your 'Average' user isn't going to have a domain based network at home.

So, yeah, if you want more features, pay MS more money.
