Its been quite a while since I surfed these forums. I've learned to fix the problems that are going on with my computer, but for some reason this one I just cant figure out.

For some reason IE and Firefox won't open. I can't see any problems in the things I was viewing on the net before the problem started, so I am thinking that it may be a software issue. I've updated my internet browsers to their current version and they didn't open after doing so. I just reinstalled the previous versions and they opened like they usually would. And I currently am still on those outdated versions so it definitely can't be that.

I ill say that I just tried something out of the blue one day and it is a temporary fix. I was able to create a second user profile and that was able to open both browsers. But every time I start my computer, in order for me to start the browsers, I have to log into one user profile, switch users, and then log into the other.

I have enclosed a Hijackthis log.

Note: The log is pretty broken up on the account that I had to space out all of the links.

Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1

Have you tried running either browser in Safe Mode (no addons)?

For a default Firefox installation, you would do this but going to
Start > All Programs > Mozilla Firefox > Mozilla Firefox (Safe Mode)

or running firefox.exe with the -safe-mode switch.

If the browser runs in safe mode, it is an add-on/toolbar/plugin that is causing issues with the browser. Since add-ons and toolbars are user-specific, this would explain why the browser works on another account. To fix this, simply remove add-ons/toolbars/plugins that could potentially be causing compatibility issues, or check for updates to the add-on/toolbar/plugin.

I just tried to open up the browsers in their respective safe modes on the other profile, but they still do not come up. I did a complete scan a while ago, and even though it did take out a few trojans and such, the programs fail to open.

I have read on other sites as well that sometimes the process will be there, but the window won't pop up. However that was not the case for me.

Mozilla Crash Reporter doesn't show after starting Firefox?

Try going into your Task Manager and killing the nonessential processes. From what I see it would be the following:
Code: [ Select ]
C:\Program Files\Ahead\InCD\InCDsrv.exe
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswUpdSv.exe
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe

Then try running your browser. If it starts normally, then one of those programs is affecting the browser.

If it still doesn't start, then start your computer in Safe Mode with Networking. Then try starting Firefox. If it starts, then it was an influence by an external program/service that you may/may not have killed earlier. From there it's trial and fire.

I went through the processes that you listed and got rid of all of the nonessential ones. One I didnt do was svchost.exe, because there were os many of them. Could this be a problem. While looking at the task manager, there are nine svchost.exe processes. 5 in System, 2 in Local Service, and 2 in Network Service. Also, one process that I terminated seems to come back on.

Its the Iap.exe one. Any idea what that it?

Thanks.

Having that many svchosts is normal, I have that many at the moment. Iap.exe appears to be part of the Dell OpenManage Client. Not really necessary and you can probably set that service to disabled.

Windows Services can be set to automatically restart should it unexpectedly end, which is one of the benefits to using services.

Did you try starting the computer in safe mode?

I went to boot in Safe Mode with Networking yesterday. And I found two things; one, Firefox does open up right away in safe mode, but the problem I found was that I couldn't connect to the internet. And I distinctly remember selecting the option for Safe Mode with Networking.

Ok, that is progress. I believe your Internet did not connect because you are using Linksys' connectivity tool to connect to a wireless network, instead of using Windows, and Safe Mode disallows programs to start. So if Firefox starts in Safe Mode, then it is another program that is causing problems.

I notice you have two Antivirus programs, Authentium and Avira. Having multiple antivirus programs on a computer can cause numerous issues, and this may be a side effect of that. Use only one Antivirus. Personally I recommend AVG or Avira.

Next, download CCleaner. Click on Run Cleaner. Once that has completed, click the Registry tab. Uncheck the "Unused File Extensions" option, and then click "Scan for Issues", and then "Fix Selected Issues", saving a backup to your documents.

Do that and then lets see where we are.

Wait...it says I have two anti-virus programs? I only downloaded one and its the Avast. I think you may just have found my problem. I will get rid of the one and then I will try the CCleaner as you suggested.

Sorry for no updates, but I have been quite busy with work. Anyways, as suggested I removed Authentium, then downloaded CCleaner and did the steps recommended. But as of yet, I still need to do the aforementioned steps just to open my internet browsers.

There was a little problem I ran through though. For some reason, maybe when I updated these browsers a while back, I couldn't download anything. A couple of days ago I checked on a possible problem and found a solution in which apparently a downloading option in my internet's zone options was set to disabled rather than prompt. Im not sure how this happened, but it did. Anyways after that, I was able to download CCleaner easily and proceed with the steps.
