I found a VB script that will delete the necessary policy from the registry which disables the use of the registry tools: Regedit, Regedt32, and Reg.

Code: [ Select ]
'Enable Registry Editing
'© Veegertx - 06/27/2003
'This code may be freely distributed/modified
On Error Resume Next
'Prevents errors from values that don't exist
Set WshShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
'Delete DisableRegistryTools registry values

WshShell.RegDelete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\DisableRegistryTools"
'display message
Message = "You should have access to Regedit now"

X = MsgBox(Message, vbOKOnly, "Done")
Set WshShell = Nothing
Set fso = Nothing
  1. 'Enable Registry Editing
  2. '© Veegertx - 06/27/2003
  3. 'This code may be freely distributed/modified
  4. On Error Resume Next
  5. 'Prevents errors from values that don't exist
  6. Set WshShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
  7. 'Delete DisableRegistryTools registry values
  8. WshShell.RegDelete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\DisableRegistryTools"
  9. 'display message
  10. Message = "You should have access to Regedit now"
  11. X = MsgBox(Message, vbOKOnly, "Done")
  12. Set WshShell = Nothing
  13. Set fso = Nothing

Copy and paste the above into a text file and save it as "RegEnable.vbs". Double click the file and you should be back in business.

Just wanted to add that this setting can be adjusted through gpedit:

gpedit.msc

Gpedit isn't available in WinXP Home edition.
