Hi, I'm trying to use Recovery Console (on a XP SP2 laptop) as per:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=307545

However I'm stuck at:

copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config\system

I cannot find this system file in Repair.

Any thoughts? I can get it off another PC, but its too big for a floppy (4 meg).

Can I save it to a CD from the good PC and access it on the crippled machine? Will Recovery Console allow this?

Or do I face the music and do a clean install?

Any suggestions appreciated.

Regards,
JMac

Hello Jmac,

Not sure why that file isn't in the repair directory.

Don't try copying the system file from another machine. That file contains system specific data and will not work.

Before you try a clean install:

From the recovery console, enter this:

chkdsk /r

If that doesn't resolve your problem, try a repair install:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... -us;315341

Follow the instructions for method two. A repair install will not erase your data and programs, however, you will need to re-install updates/service packs. That is unless you have a XP CD with SP2 integrated.
