Repair == bad.

fdisk /mbr, fdisk, format, clean install == good.

This is how I do it, and I do it every ~6months (But I usually get a new comp every 6months anyway. :-D)

How to Install/Re-Install Microsoft Windows the right way:

1.) Remove extraneous hardware. You don't need any NIC's, Sound cards, etc.. All you should have in or enabled (if onboard) is a video card.

2.) Only put 1 stick of memory in (if you have more than 1). I normally use b/w 1.5Gb and 2.0Gb of Ram, (512mb x 3/4). But when I load the system I only use 1 512mb stick.

3.) Take the HDD (put into another system as secondary). Partition and format the drive (I use custom sector settings).

4.) Install Windows

5.) step by step, re-install or re-enable your H/W adding drivers every step of the way. I normally don't use driver disks, I DL the latest stable or modded drivers and have them on a CD.

6.) Ghost it and burn the image to a DVD. Done!
