hey everybody
my dad just got a new computer at work (sadly not a laptop)
and he wants to be able to transfer files and remote desktop the two computers
(this one and the one at work)
they both have xp pro
but his is connected to a server
and our home computer is on a wireless router

so is there a possible way to do both things?

He'll need to probably have a brief meeting with his network admin.

First the server will need to have a static IP accessable from outside the company's internal network. He'll need to know the IP of the server and the port number the administrator set for external access to his computer. More than likely his admin hasn't done so at this point.

Then when you open remote desktop and enter the info to connect, he'll have to enter the IP and port. It will look like this 123.123.123.123:1234 (adjust the above to the numbers the admin gives you -- the numbers after the colon are the port)

He'll also have to have a login username and password which should be the same he uses to login to his workstation, but again he should check with his admin. In any case, he'll probably need to talk to his Admin about it.

There are other methods, but that one is the easiest so I'd suggest trying it first.

ok
i'll tell him that
his works servers used to be command typed style
they're now going to to a windows based system
so they haven't even set it up right now
the network's going to be ASP
so he uses his soon to be gone laptop that crashes every 20 minutes

i'll just add this to this post

i go over to my friends almost everyday okay
so sometimes i want to do some stuff on my computer like save school work on my computer or whatever

both houses are behind wireless routers
he has dsl and i have cable(soon to go to dsl)
i want to go from his computer(windows 2000 pro) to my computer(windows xp pro SP1)
is that possible through remote desktop connection from xp or would i need another program?

You may want to do some snurfing around here:

It should answer most of your questions.
