I use Remote Desktop every day as part of my job. I have never had any bad experiences with it.

A really good Remote Control Application is DameWare, which unfortunately is used by a lot of hackers!

I'm not 100% positive, but I don't think him being wired and you being wireless has anything to do with it. What program are u using to remote?

it definitely could. if your router isn't IP forwarding, then you won't get the remote request to connect.

What I mean is, from outside the router, you are connecting to the
external IP of the router, and not directly to your pc, which is using an
internal IP (i.e. 192.168.x.x). In your router, you have to set the
forwarding to the internal IP.
