I have a broken icon in Windows 7 which will not allow me to delete it from the desktop. When I right click on it and select properties it says 'the properties for this item are unavailable.' The icon image is also gone and shows a broken link. The underlying app had been removed a while ago. The Action Center cleanup doesn't show the icon either. Is there a file I can go into and edit out the link on the desktop or find it in the Registry? Not sure what to do and where all this stuff is stored. Thanks for your help

I am wondering if your desktop just needs to be refreshed. Try right clicking on your desktop and then click on "refresh" and see if the problem still persists.

Thanks for the quick reply, but no luck with Refresh. Tried dragging it to the recycle bin, no luck either.

You can try searching for the app in the registry and delete any keys that it finds. Be sure to make a backup of your registry first though just in case.

Thanks, I'll do a search. Are desktop icons stored in a particular way or special key?
