Just curious as to what the error message was ?

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=179599

To check to see if the properties of the Links folder's is set to Hidden

Click Favorites on the toolbar.
Right-click the Links folder, and then click Properties.
Click to select the Hidden check box.
Click OK.

When you add a Web page to the Links folder or the Links toolbar, its shortcut is copied to the <windows>\Favorites\Links folder, where <windows> is the name of the folder in which Windows is installed. If user profiles are enabled on your computer, the Web page shortcut is copied to the <windows>\Profiles\<username>\Favorites\Links folder, where windows is the name of the folder in which Windows is installed, and <username> is the name you use to log on to Windows.

try this real quick ,,for the first one you need your XP O/S disk

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x Repair for Windows XP

From the Start menu, select Run.
In the Open field, type sfc /scannow (Note: There is a space between sfc and /scannow)
Select the OK button.
Follow the prompts throughout the System File Checker process.
Reboot the computer when System File Checker completes.

this one you do not : need O/S disk
Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x Repair for Windows XP

From the Start menu, select Search, select All Files and Folders.
Select More Advanced Options and place a checkmark beside Search Hidden Files and Folders option.
Ensure that Search System Folders and Search Subfolders are also checked.
In the All or Part of the File Name box, type ie.inf
In the Look In drop-down menu, select C: or the letter of the hard drive that contains the Windows folder.
Click the Search button.
In the search results pane, find the ie.inf file located in Windows\Inf folder.
Right click the ie.inf file and click Install on the context menu.
Reboot the computer when the file copy process is complete.

try that first.

Just for the heck ,I want you to download McAfee AVERT Stinger.
It's (798KB) little ..If I am not mistaken ,it's setup to remove specific viruses.and one of the viruses it removes does that ,and now that you said the problem with desktop .

http://download.nai.com/products/mcafee ... tinger.exe

And then just to cross check, you want to go to TrendMicro ,and
use there online scanner " HouseCall" (it's the best one on the Internet) and BookMark it .So you can run a scan from time to time.
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/houseca ... t_corp.asp

Next ,I don't no what kind of Anti-Virus software you have running
on your pc !

But there are alot of good free Anti-Virus programs My fav is AntiVir Personal Edition ,you get an online update almost every day,and it's real light on resources. http://www.majorgeeks.com/download955.html

Heres the page with them all ,there's( 4 nice programs for free)just pick one. lol..All are free and all get updates for free.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads29.html
AVG Free Edition 6.0 Build 762
Avast! Home Edition 4.1.412
AntiVir Personal Edition 6.27.00.03
a-squared (a²) Free edition 1.1

Back in the day (not anymore) Norton ,and McAfee were the standards.
They are both heavy on system resources( and what that means is they
take more of your of your processor (CPU) memory usage,as they run in the background ,alot more so than those free ones.

Also if none of the above work .lol Download HijackThis 1.98.2
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html

And after you install it ,the first time you bring it up to use ,
hit the (scan button) ,then down on the lefthand side hit (Save Log)
put that log in a file that you use all the time so you no were it's at.
Then got to it ,open it ,and copy and paste it here,on your post..okay

Then JrzyCrim (moderator and resident HijackThis expert) will decipher it .
See if you have anything that all that other above missed.

This is just in case that it's not spyware.read this.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... -us;243514

Sometimes if you just use this utility ,it fixes the problem ,then just
uninstall it. It's called Delete FXP Files.and what it does is scans
then shows suspect names in files in (RED) like system device's files,,,but ,all others are white..you have to figure what looks suspect .
and thats easy ,just do search in google of the file name ,and you will find out in 2 seconds,if you want to keep it or not. I think it will pretty much delete anything if you want .lol
http://www.jrtwine.com/Products/DelFXPFiles/

Scroll down on that link to download it.

Was this the error:
Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience" when you right-click a folder

.dll files when they corrupt will give that error.

It is indeed the error that you just mentioned in the last line, and sometimes it follows with this error as well.

"Dr. Watson Postmorten has encountered a problem, and needs to close."

I ran stinger on the system and got no infected files. At the same time, my PC is free of spyware and trojans. I use both SpySweeper and Trojan hunter.

I will have the Hijackthis log posted shortly.

Regards,
JP

I'm going over your log right now. At first glance, I do see some problems.

I'd recommend you uninstall kazaa. It's infamous for being packaged with spyware/adware.

In the meantime, you should visit Trend Micro's Housecall:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/houseca ... t_corp.asp

Select your location and click go. Be sure to Check 'Auto Clean' before scanning. After that, reboot. Run Hijack this and scan, post the new log.

Go to start > run

Temporary Internet files
Recycle Bin
Temporary Files

Click OK

Login for each user on your system and repeat the steps for Clearing Temporary Folders\Files and Internet Files.

Reboot, run Hijack This, scan, save the log, post the log.

If you still have the right click problem, please list all the context menu entries you have in your 'Right click' menu. One of those could be causing your problem. It's fairly common for a third party application to add a buggy context menu handler.

I had the problem again in IE6 when I returned back, and after finishing what you asked me to do.

I then tried again but this time I was able to delete all my favourites.
I then added some new ones, and it seems to have worked fine for a couple of times.

But now it seems to repeat the same problem again. Urrgghhh

Anyhow, please find the new Hijackthis log.

Sorry buddy. But I think I rushed to this post from my first happy moment thinking that this thing had been solved.

I can see that I can rename but not delete when I press the Organize, and go into it's window. However, when ever I right click only on the favourite folders in the left pane in the IE6 Window I get this error. At the same time, I don't have this problem when clicking on individual files.

There is something that I noticed. Which is a mysterious Links folder. I had deleted it and it has now reappeared.

Please note that I have problem with getting the context menu with folders only. But not with the individual files.

Looking forward for your help. I believe we are very close in solving this problem.

Thanks again mate.

Regards,
JP

That links folder always comes back in IE. See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=179599 (that's the same link MOC provided earlier)

You might try this program: ToolbarCop

Quote:
Most of the Internet Explorer crashes are due to malware browser helper objects.

Download and install that. Try disabling toolbars and Context menu Extensions one at a time until the problem goes away.

I mentioned earlier that 3rd party applications and extensions can sometimes cause problems like this. Maybe you can track the problem down with this program.

Also, if you are still having problems with folders on the desktop and in Windows Explorer (not IE), then if you can, please list all the extra right click menu entries that are present. It could be another program's context menu handler that is screwing things up. Windows explorer and Internet explorer share many of the same features.

I did as you said with ToolbarCop and removed all unwated stuff. Proplem still exists.

Regardsing MOC's link. I have checked it beofre, but you must note that I can't right click to check the properties. So I couldn't do anything with it.

I have no propblem in Right clicking and getting into the context menu for both files and folders on the Desktop.

However, I do have this problem in right-clicking and checking the context menu in Windows Explorer and IE6, but only with the folders. Not the files.

I have managed to check the Context menu listing when right clicking on a file.
The extras I get are;
- Open With Acropbat 6.0
- Scan with NAV
- Scan with Trojanhunter
- Email with Yahoo!

Will this help?

See if you can get the right click menu items for folders. Try right clicking on a folder on the desktop.

Also, check the event viewer. go to Start > Run and enter: eventvwr.msc

Look for any errors related to explorer crashes under application and system.

Hey Mate,

I just uninstalled all this software which didn't make sense. Apparently one of them was causing the problem. Now it's fixed. Thanks for all your help.

Have a nice weekend.

It was either
SpySweeper or Yahoo! Toolbar. I am not sure.

But it's great to be able to right click again !:)

Hmm, spysweeper. I seem to remember reading about users having a problem with explorer crashes when having that program installed. I'll have to do a search for that. I wish I would have been paying closer attention to your previous posts. I noticed that you were using spysweeper after going back through this thread.

The latest version may not have that problem. Which version were you using?

Hey Jim and Mike,

I would like to thank you a lot for all your help. But I just want to add one more tip.

Remember the svhost.exe which looks suspicious. Apparently it turned out to be used to have my P900 Mobile phone connect to my PC via the cradle. i just wanted to say this as a hint for the future.

Thanks again lads and have a nice weekend to y'all.
