Windows 98 Second Edition is just that, it's a re-release of Windows 98. My guess is they found a bunch of bugs and such, but instead of making everyone get patches to fix them, they just re-released it.

The reason I ask is I want to purchase a video editing software and part of the system requirements is a minimum of Win 98SE. I checked my laptop's system properties and it reads Win 98 so I assume it's not the SE version. I don't know if I should take a chance on the software of upgrade?

If it says that it needs Win98SE, it probably won't work. I've tried to use software on Win98 computers that required Win98SE without any luck. If you can find a copy of Win98SE for relatively cheap, I would definitely suggest an upgrade.

Well, considering it's a laptop and I'm assuming it shipped with Windows 98, he probably will only barely be able to meet the minimum requirements for XP if at all, and thus would probably experience a great decrease in speed.

A question for wmthomas1 though, did the software you are considering purchasing have any minimum RAM requirements? You might also want to check into that too before purchasing it.

Oops! One more question. Could I safely upgrade by downloading SE on top of my Win 98? For that matter Win 2000? Or is it better to buy a new rig?

Just out of curiosity, can you update 98 to 98SE through windows update? Put another way, will applying all of the available updates for 98 be the same as having 98SE?
