I have been trying to connect a XP Pro Sp3 workstation to a Server 2003 Domain, however I cant do it because every time I try I get an error saying that the domain could not be contacted, The workstation its able to connect to the network, and even access the internet, also if I try ping the domain will give me a Request time out messege back. Is there anything Im missing?

I hope I dont confuse you guys, thanks in advance

Do an IPCONFIG /ALL on the problem PC and make sure your DNS servers are listed.

What happens when you ping the Domain Controller?

If you know the IP address and server name of the DC with Active Directory add an entry for it in your hosts file, reboot your computer and attempt to join again.

Are your DNS servers listed when you do an IPCONFIG /all on the workstation?

Most likely they are listed and are correct. I've had this happen with several XP machines, including the one I'm typing on right now. When you try to join the domain you get a message that a Domain Controller could not be found. And I'm quite certain that the DNS servers are correct on the machines this has happened to.

Typically if I reboot it will work. If it doesn't, adding an entry to the hosts file and rebooting will allow it to work.

To this day I haven't figured out why this happens, but it has happened several times to me.

I have experienced problems joining PC's to the domain when I don't add the .com portion of the domain.

For example putting in DOMAIN will give me the error listed above but entering DOMAIN.COM will work just fine.

Other than that I have had issues like this when the DNS address is wrong.

If I follow this step, will I still need to add the computer to the domain using the normal steps?

Thanks in advance
