unmountable boot volume

Hi there
I've got a dell inspiron, its about two and a half years old. yesterday it just decided to suddenly change from the screensaver to the blue screen that says unmountable boot volume. now i havent got the xp disk as it came already installed, so how do i fix it myself? or do i have to go to someone to fix it? :( please help as it has all my music and pictures on it, plus all my uni work too :(

It's a typical problem, not so much the blue screen but the fact that you don't have a backup.

Reboot & hold F8. If you get to the boot menu, choose last known good config or safe mode. If it boots backup your files. If that doesn't work, remove the drive, mount it in a USB enclosure, connect it to another PC & copy your files.

Then put the drive back in the PC, boot it & hold F10. If there is a recovery partition, follow the instructions.
