Have you tried installing USB drivers in safe mode too?
What OS are you using?
For XP there are several known issues regarding USB drivers to be incompatible. All those lead to the installation of latest service pack and hotfixes.
Have you done that too?
As you have not posted your OS version so I am assuming it to be XP.
Now,
if all methods fail to show up device on the device manager you may do a common workaround

no, what i was saying, is that that entire tree, the one that shows all of the usb ports installed on the computer was not there.

however, i solved the problem. i remembered i had a similar problem a little while ago when my dell wlan network adapter conked out. it was because something got changed in the bios. so all i had to do was "Load Optimized Deaults"
i dont know what it changed, all i know is that it worked.

thanks for the timely reply though

Press Del when you first turn on your computer. Find the "Load Defaults" or "Load optimized Defaults" and press Enter and it will ask you if you are sure. Press Y and then Save and Exit.

Sometimes it isn't Del, some BIOS manufacturers use different ones. You could be able to find out as when the computer first starts up and is doing its memory test down the bottom of the screen it should say something like "Press X to enter Setup" or "Press X to enter the BIOS"

Yup especially if your screen takes a moment to come on. I know mine if I'm just starting it up it won't really show up until after the POST has finished.

thanks for the info shared...you're a life saver. At least for my usb ports. I thought they were dead for good and burning in hell. Little sneaky bastards gave me a headache.

Thanks for this idea of resetting bios. It worked. I think recent Bios update had caused it.
