I don't know if this was a virus (i'm assuming so) but i have windows XP home.

whenever my family or i logged into our user name, the desktop and all icons would load, and then the whole computer would restart.

we ran our norton antivirus program with updated definitions, and it didn't find anything

so, what was this, i've been dying to know and never really had any place to ask...

thanks in advance.

opened the program (obviously)

clicked "Scan for Viruses"

Clecked "Scan my computer" so that it did everything and not just one part...

sorry if that isn' the type of answer you're looking for

and as for safe mode, we didn't get a chance to try...we were going to when it stoped doing it...

sorry i can't be of more help with my answers

when I say how did you run virus scan I meant how were you able to use it if the computer restarts after every log-in?

ook, i see what you're saying...

after about 4 or 5 restarts it let me on....

after i ran the virus scan i tried to restart again and it kept restarting after i tried to log on...

it was more of a lucky shot that i even got a chance to run the virus scan

sorry i should've explained that before

Go to start|run - type in MSCONFIG - go to the start tab and list here what programs are set to run on startup. (the name of the file or proggy is sufficient (i.e sysmon, rundll32, etc) If you get as far as you do, I think that what is happening is that a program that is set to run on startup is causing conflicts (possibly driver conflicts) and causing the restart. If we can see what programs are set to run on startup, we can possibly help you discover what should or shouldn't be there.

Really, it sounds like a windows error. I am thinking you have something that windows doesn't agree with and just doesn't know how to deal with it. It could be a virus but I don't think so. I would try the msconfig thing first like ATNO/TW said..

I had this kind of problem twice,

i found once on my startup a virus, so i removed it, and then it was fine.

second time, i couldn't fix it, but when i did system restore point for a week before, every think was fine

good luck
