The small speaker icon in the tray near the clock, lower right corner, sometimes diapers on startup and then is sometimes there. Is there a way to bring it back if it is not there and a way to stop it from disappearing?

if XP is the same as 2k its control panel / sounds & multimedia /
and on that config box towards the bottom there's a little checkbox that says "Show Volume controll on the taskbar", make sure its checked.
Strong with this one, the sudo is.

Check these instructions. XP by default is set to hide inactive system tray icons after a certain period of time. They come back if the programs are used or after reboot.

Simply uncheck the box that says hide inactive icons.

An excellent tip. Interesting though, in that I have mine checked to show, and it randomly does/doesn't at startup. I attribute a shredded registery :)

right click on your toolbar.

Click Customize.

In the behavior icon, it will tell you what each of your current tool bar icons are set to and what your past tool bar icons are set to, if you click these setting a dropdown menu with appear. change it according to how you would like it...
