I was wondering what you guys would typically install on a brand new PC right when you first get it. My laptop hard drive recently crashed and i'm installing windows on it with the new hard drive installed right now and as i always do I am going to be installing some programs that I like to use to maintain my PC.... Here's what I install:

CodeStuff Starter - I use this to disable programs from starting up when the PC starts

AVG Anti-Virus - This is (in my opinion) the best free anti-virus software available.

Lavasoft Ad-Aware - To search for and remove spyware on a regular basis.

Firefox - Because i'm not an IE fan.

Please post up the programs you would install on your new PC...

AVG antivirus
Firefox
Spybot search and destroy
merriam-webster dictionary
K-lite co-dec this is the only way I can play .RAR I think it is or the "streamed video" that I need for work.
I will do more research, but I always like the enhancements to performance of daily tasks: duplicate finders(I found one "free" which was actually a trial and costs $20), organizers(yet to find one)
I don't use a calendar...maybe when I get a larger monitor...
some burning software for regular backups of pictures
if it has a card reader I don't need to install camera software
drivers for printer(s) and scanner(s)...maybe fax...I think the fax won't work with VOIP, though...that's what e-mail is for, no? I also have an HP bundled program for faxes over computer...

I like the basic text programs(notepad) but every so often benefit from templates and enhanced procedures/calculations performed by the "office" programs, either openoffice.org or microsoft
Word or its contenders offer the ability to paste an image and easily put text in the same file. This is helpful for tutorials or troubleshooting.

thunderbird e-mail client --only for POP available services: g-mail, my ISP, not lycos, not hotmail, not yahoo, not sure about netscape/aol...

I haven't set it up yet but something with WinAmp to play the extracted music files from SNES games(I think .smc files)

I like my research, and sometimes use the research tools on computers and Internetworks to further my recreational activities but just prefer time away from electricity to truly relax.
Which reminds me, customized add-ons for firefox: customize google, ad-aware, download video...anything that skips or strips the unnecessary and gets me to my objective quicker is a plus.
oh, and backstreet browser...lets you download parts of (or the entire?)Web sites in such a way that you can access it offline....still need some research to get it working just right...would be great for someone who wants to edit wikipedia ^^

Categories: diagnostics, research tools(Web-based(search/retrieve) or database(dictionary/encyclopedia), performance enhancers, media --where the entertainment might fit ^^
