I moved your post here to Windows. I know from your PM that you are on Windows 98, but if you can provide more details please, like when did this start happening? Have you installed any new software, windows updates etc, just prior to the problem? The more detail the better.

Are you doing this:
opening a folder window (like my documents) and going to view the folder options.. then clicking the view tab, then under the hidden files folder, select show all files. You can also show really important system files (really not recomended, unless you have to change the windows boot loader or soemthing) by checking the box that was supposed to be under the hidden files folder, it said something show importan system files. I can't seem to find it on my current desktop, but I know it works at the one I have at home.

The "really hidden" system files option isn't available on Windows 98,. If I'm reading his problem correctly, he doesn't even have the option to select show all files or not.

Do this:

Go to Start | Run and type regedit

Navigate to the following registry key (If you've never used regedit just navigate like you do in Windows Explorer in the left frame) : Here is the key you are looking for.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Advanced\Folder\Hidden

Under the hidden key you should also have NOHIDDEN, NOHIDORSYS and SHOALL

Let us know if those keys are there or not there. (Don't do anything with them... just let us know which of those keys are there or not)

Upload the images for the screen shots to a place on the internet that you can link to and then paste the links to the images into your reply.
