I'm trying to reformat my computer (Win XP home sp1) and after going to the recovery thing I get the dos screen. I type map and then type

format C: /fs:ntfs

After I do this it says if you do this it will delete everything yadda yadda..

I press Y and hit enter and it just goes to <C:\windows>

nothing happens..

any ideas?

There is no need to do that. Just follow along with the installation and when it gets to the point where it asks you where to install XP, choose the existing drive location. In the next step it should give you the option to format.

I do, but it won't let me delete the partion and I can't install it because it already has windows installed on it.

In that case, use a Windows 98 boot disk to delete the partition the old way with FDISK, then let Windows XP create a new one on a blank drive.

You can download a 98 bood disk below if you don't have one handy:
http://1gighost.net/dosimgs/boot98c.exe

If you don't have a floppy, I can make you a bootable CD ISO to do the same thing.

I have a floppy, thanks. Its rediculous that you have to do all this just to reformat your computer...Microsoft needs to fix this problem area...

Well, normally XP should take care of partitioning and formatting automaticly. But since that is not working, this a workaround.
