Windows automatically updated as I logged off at 10.50pm last night.

When I logged on this morning I could get an Internet connection OK (Talktalk) but no pages could be displayed on Int Explorer and no Emails would download (Outlook Express). Just kept asking for password............then failed.

Did a System restore to -24hrs and all was fine.

Updates still being indicated as required so clicked on yellow shield icon did them manually.

Same problem as before so had to restore again! ? ! ?.

What is going on ?

You can disable the auto-update system at the control panel.

Thanks for the reply.

Is it advisable to disable updates?

I have changed to "Notify me when updates are available but don't install them" ...............for now anyway.

Any ideas why the latest update caused the problems? Surely it's not just me?

I haven't had any issues with XP updates. Which update caused the problem?

Which operating system?
Next time you go to install updates, don't install them. Write down a list of the updates exactly as they appear and post them.

As per title..............Windows XP

Can do but the problem update icon is still sitting there waiting!

If I right click on it I get the message "Windows found 2 updates" but I am only given the option to Express Install / Custom Install or Cancel!

How do I find out what the updates are?

If you choose Custom Install it will show you the updates that are waiting.

If you are using Zone Alarm, the Security update KB951748 very well could be the problem.
That update is a DNS update and looks like it conflicts with ZA

Sorry that link won't display properly here. Copy and paste the entire thing into your browser.

I'm not seeing that Zone Alarm has a fix available, but I was reading where setting the security to medium may solve it.

You could also simply not install that update.

YES !

You are correct, I do use Zone Alarm.

Thanks for the info. I will look into it.

Thanks again for the advice.

Update: Just installed the Malicious software removal tool & omitted the Security Update and all seems OK.

Cheers.
