Hi, I have a problem, where my computer randomly crashes on me.

I've been writing down the error reports, and the most common one seems to be Stop: 0x0000007F (0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). Other errors I've gotten have been 0x0000000A, 0x000000D1, and most recently 0x0000008E.

Occasionally, it'll crash without me even being by the computer, but I have found it crashes the most when I playing the game Final Fantasy XI, or using Bit Torrent.

I've checked my Error Log and it seems as if the most comon error (besides my CD ROM errors) are DCOM errors ( The server {a number here} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.)

Originally I thought this was my power source, or my system overheating, but since I've activated the Blue Screen option, rather than simply restarting, it seems as if the problem is neither of these.

Any ideas as to what it might be?

Edit: Oh yes, I have SP1 and not SP2

I would do a little troubleshooting first ,start easy ,,you need the XP cd .
Go Start , Run , type "SFC /scannow" (without the quotes) and press enter with the CD in ,that will check your files .
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=310747 ,tells you what it does if you never used it before
and this is to check your memory
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/mtinst.exe
this tells you how to use it.
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp#top

STOP 0X000008e means a bad memory module ,and an irregular power supply.

0x000000D1 can be caused by using Logitech MouseWare versions 9.10 and 9.24
http://www.logitech.com/
have any logitech stuff ?

0x0000007F

It could be new firmware that you installed ,could be USB (keyboard ,mouse) could be Bad memory stick (how much do you have )
You have some sort of conflict thats for shure.

Do this first: (Start, Run, type "msinfo32") to look for conflicts by selecting Hardware Resources and looking at the listings for Conflicts/Sharing and IRQs. Look for any conflicting COM ports or internal modems under Conflicts/Sharing. Under IRQs, look for any duplicate IRQs for communications devices such as COM ports, IR ports, internal modems or other serial devices. You will still need to use Device Manager to actually resolve any conflicts found using MSINFO32.

After reading around abit, I was about 60 % coninvced that it was my RAM, so I went to Frys and bought a new stick, so I'm going to see what happens.

Also, I do have a Logitech Mouse, but I don't recall installing the software for it (I used the driver Microsoft had), but I'll upate that and see.

Also, until like earlier this week (with a new printer) , I had never used the USB ports, and this problem has been happening long before that.

Also, I've gone to the conflict and sharing but I don't understand anythign that comes out of it, so if You'd Like, I'll post what I see?

I've also recently updated my CD Rom firmware (and that screwed up my CD player!!), but again, these problems have been happening before that....

http://www.jsiinc.com/SUBM/tip6100/rh6111.htm
thats the site that talks about Logitech Mouse

I bet it's the ram.

Some devices can share IRQ's
http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... -US;314068

And some cannot .
this is what a conflict would look like ..lol
IRQ 11 ABIT Siluro GF3
IRQ 11 VIA USB Universal Host Controller
IRQ 11 VIA USB Universal Host Controller
IRQ 11 WinXP Promise Ultra100 TX2 (tm) IDE Controller
IRQ 11 LT Win Modem

They cannot all use IRQ 11

Poof!

well, I think it's not the RAM anymore.

I just switched a Patriot 512MB DDR PC2700 with a Kingston 512MB DDR PC3200, and BAM I crashed.

If it had been RAM, this would have been so much eaiser to fix too :(

Any other ideas, and do you want me to post the conflict and sharing report?

yea
go ahead

did you get to run the SFC /scannow

Do you have any of this installed /
Easy CD Creator

these are other cause for those error's too;

Hardware failure (memory, processor, or motherboard).
Anti-virus software that is running on your computer.
Drivers installed by third-party software.
I'am just throwing things out there for you ..maybe something you
installed ,a little while back .
this codec SigmaTel AC'97 audio codec

I gota go (it's 1:30 AM ,EST ) I'll check ya when I get up

unfortunately, I cannot run the scan option, because my WIndows XP Prof. CD is at home (and I'm at college), so I'm going to see if I can borrow a CD to do the scan.

Not necesarily daoster, new computers are capable to share IRQ between hardware.

Regarding your system overheating, do you have your CPU overclocked? also check at windows update if there's an update you are missing.

No, I haven't been overclocking my CPU, or my graphics card, or anything like that.

Under the event viewer, under system log, the DCOM Errors seem to be happening whenever I crash. this is the message I've read:

"The server {9F92FFA3-40D1-475A-9323-A39C705DAB86} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout."

Well, after a bit of snoop around, I ended up at Reg Edit.
Under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT > CLSID > 9F92FFA3-40D1-475A-9323-A39C705DAB86 and the registry seems to belong to...my Symantec Security Center!

Now I'm trying to remember if this problem has happened before I installed this program.

Do you guys think this might be the cause of my problems?

Here you can find information at what caused this error:
http://www.eventid.net/display.asp?eventid=10010&eventno=508&source=DCOM&phase=1

I cannot find much information about this error with Symantec, seems to be related with Norton's Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) Update wich allows the Windows Security Center to accurately report on the status of your Symantec security software. Some poeple have tried reinstalling Norton's products without the WMI update, or you could look for updates at Symantec thru Live Update.

http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/?Open
see if you have this (Usrprmpt.exe ) in.. C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Security Center

Disabled it for the time being (see if's it's starting in Msconfig) and uncheck it under the startup tab,,,then go to next door to the
services tab and check the box that says (hide all microsoft services)
we are just doing this for troubleshooting purposes..Then uncheck any
NV ,symantec services ,,and reboot .

it was meant for SP2 but if SP2 is not installed it will create problems.
Usrprmpt.exe is basically a Symantec security update built for WinXP SP2 new security feature.

Don't even think about going near SP2 with that system for now.lol

let me no what happens.

Do you get any Internet Explorer error messages

So I updated my WMI on Norton...restarted, and that made it so I couldn't even use Norton anymore. So I've just uninstalled it (iI'll reinstall it when I'm back at home).

I'll keep you guys updated to see if it still restarts =\

thanks for the help so far

UPDATE!!!

so it crashed again...

the scary part is that the Event Viewer didn't even record the Crash. I'm at a lost now, any ideas?

You could do what I call a hardware shoot .lol
that means ,take your time (it's nice if you had a can of air ,
and a small paint brush ..What happens is when you get frustrated
like this it's best to do something ,than nothing .
I would take the side off , disconnect the power the from the
back ,turn some tunes on ,and start uninstalling ,
I usually do ethernet first (cause it's the lowest PCI card ) and work up .
and if you have a brush ,dust it off ,clean ,and re-install it .
next in my case I have a SATA/150 hard drive pci card ,work your way up
and then the video card ,disconnect the VGA cord and remove it ,clean it
and re-install it , then I usually diconnect the 80 pin H/D ribbons ,and reconnect ,I disconnect all power and reconnect H/D ,diconnect Floppy
reconect it /CD-rom ,same deal (downside is ,if you have a sound pci card ,and your graphics card ,you will have to install the drivers back.
that might take you 10 mins to do that .lol

But ,from doing this simple chore ,I have fixed alot of problems on peoples computers ,that otherwise some gremlin might have got the best of it .

That simple task of removing everything and re-installing works more than not ...so it's up to you ..then if it's still doing it you can toss it out the window (you have to take pictures tho if you do that so you can share.lol)
