Windows Installer hangs after starting Windows

Thanks in advance for any help from this forum. Here's the issue...everytime I power up the computer a "Windows Installer" box hangs up on the screen, sometimes changing to "Preparing to Install". If I attempt to 'cancel' nothing happens. After about 10 minutes it will go away on it's own. I've used Ctrl-alt-del to see what it's trying to install and it's been a different program each time. This all began happening after I uninstalled a few unwanted programs. Clues? Thanks !

Check your startup items in msconfig to see what's starting up with Windows. Chances are you have a few entries left over in there that weren't removed by the uninstallers.

Go to Start -> Run... and type in msconfig. Go to the Startup tab and look for things that no longer need to be there. If you're unsure about some of them, leave them and ask.

If you're still having problems, try posting a HijackThis log, and someone will take a look for you.

OK, thanks for the tips. Just to be sure, I installed and ran Housecall, Spybot, and Ad-Aware following the instructions provided in "Steps to Take Before Posting your Hijack This Log". No major issues there. One thing I forgot to mention prior to having Windows Installer hang up each time I boot is the fact when I uninstalled a few programs, I was warned that these programs have shared files, and that also deleting these files may cause problems with other programs, etc, etc. I choose 'also delete shared files' which may be why I'm having issues. I also wasn't sure what to change in the msconfig - frankly I didn't know what most of it meant, or what programs they were associated with. Anyway, here's my Hijack This log if it helps and thanks in advance for the patience/any help you can provide:

Has anyone peeked at my log above to see what they think? Anything that looks like it could use a fix?

Thanks!

Patience, volgelm, people here have their daily lives to attend to. You're problem will be looked at when someone gets the chance.

I'm not sure at this point what's causing the Windows Installer hang you're describing, but you can fix the following entries using HijackThis:
Quote:
O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Gamma Loader.lnk = ?

O4 - Global Startup: Digital Line Detect.lnk = ?

O23 - Service: GameConsoleService - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\WildTangent\Apps\Dell Game Console\GameConsoleService.exe (file missing)

You still need to use msconfig and disable all items under Startup. If that fixes the problem, then you can begin to narrow it down to whatever the cause may be.
