There is a conflict somewhere and I wouldn't be surprised if it were Norton or another Symantec program. Disable all under the startup in msconfig and see if it still happens.

CLOSE AND EXIT MSN MESSENGER

1. Open "Windows Explorer" (Start>All programs>Accessories>Windows Explorer)

2. Locate the MSN folder (My computer>C Drive> Program Files> MSN Messenger)

3. Right-click > Properties > Security > Edit > Add > Type in "Everyone", then OK > Tick all the little boxes at the bottom > Apply > OK

4. Click "Sharing" Tab at the top > Advanced Sharing > Continue > Tick the box "Share this folder" >at' OK

That's it....Open MSN Messenger again and it should work!

Softix, how is sharing a folder, especially a program folder, going to resolve a potential conflict with an executable file?

Don't turn sharing on for the folder. It's unnecessary, won't help anything, and is a potential security risk.

The next time MSN crashes, check your Application Event Log for errors. The error(s) should give you some insight into what's causing the problem. Search for the error descriptions on Google, and if you're still coming up empty-handed, post them here so we can take a look.

In case you've never done it:
Quote:
Start -> Run... -> events.msc

Click on Application.

Unfortunately, that one doesn't provide a whole lot of insight into the problem, other than the fact that some part of the program is crashing.

Are there any other errors in there related to MSN Messenger that say anything different?

Also, take a look through these, perhaps you'll find something useful.

This happens for me too, a solution would really help, i mean, my computers overclocked and it still says 100 percent cpu usage when this thing crashes, and it causes quite a large memory leak.

not nice when you have important peopel to talk to.

also note, that old versions of messenger installed dont work either.

is it a problem with the code that they wrote or something written in the registry?
